Q: How much pocket money did you get when you were younger?

DS: I only started to get pocket money when I was 11 or 12. I got about £10 a week.

Q: Did you get more or less than your siblings and friends?

DS: When I first got my pocket money my little sister didn’t get any because she wasn’t old enough, but generally me and all my friends had the same. When my sister was old enough she got what I got when I was her age - it was all fair!

Q: Were you better at spending or saving?

DS: Definitely spending! I loved to buy music and as soon as I got my pocket money I was off into town on a Saturday to buy a CD.

Q: What did you save your money in?

DS: When I was 16 I opened a bank account, but before that I just tried to save as much money as I could... which wasn’t a lot. I wasn’t very good at saving even though I knew I should.

Q: What did you spend your pocket money on?

DS: CDs mainly and going to the movies - maybe eating out too.

Q: Did you ever ask your parents for a raise?

DS: Yes, all the time.

Q: Did you get it?

DS: No. Back then, I didn’t really see why not but looking back it was a really good thing that they said no; it taught me the value of money and how to save.

Q: What was the most expensive item you have ever bought with your pocket money?

DS: I’m not sure what was the most expensive but I remember once I saved for two weeks and bought a Beatles double CD. That was a lot of money then!

Q: When did you open your first bank account and why?

DS: When I was 16. My parents suggested I do it so I could save a little if I wanted. I was also looking for some part-time work.

Q: Do you have any money or savings tips for OINK! readers?

DS: Don’t spend your money as soon as you get it! Try and save a little every week and be patient for the things you really want. It will pay off in the long run.
